Dodgeball Tournament
In 2004, we launched an annual philanthropy event in the form of a Dodgeball Tournament where teams of students, faculty, and local residents competed in rounds of dodgeball, while raising funds for Hurricane Katrina Relief. Our 4-hour event raised over $2,000, all of which we donated to the American Red Cross. The event was well recognized on campus, with a front-page feature photo on the Daily Californian. We had almost 400 participants, with a total of 30 teams competing, including honor societies, fraternities and sororities, the Women's Rugby Team, and the nationally-ranked Cal Football Team!
We greatly urge you to participate in our tournament by putting together a team of 8-10 people or by signing up as a free agent. There will be a monetary prize for the winning team but the best prize of all is knowing that you've helped a good cause!
This year, all proceeds will be benefiting the Berkeley Free Clinic to help provide health care resources to the Cal community. The Berkeley Free Clinic is a grassroots organization that has served countless thousands in a variety of ways during its 40-year history and has become something of an icon in the Berkeley area. Due to federal budget cuts, the clinic is in jeopardy of closing its doors within the next two years if sufficient funding is not found. We hope that the funds from our tournament will help alleviate that deficit.
We are asking for each team to donate $100 as part of their registration fee, which will go directly to benefit our cause. This money will be able to help a number of people that we would not be able to reach otherwise.
The first place team will receive a $300 monetary prize. The second place team will receive a $150 monetary prize. There will be a costume contest with additional prizes! ALL PARTICIPANTS will receive a free T-shirt at registration!
Special halftime performances by: Men's Octet, Golden Overtones, Cal Slam, Berzerkeley, and more!
Music will be provided by Movin' 99.7 and 106.1 KMEL.
